Needs Statement

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy utilizes pharmacy practitioners as teachers in the experiential education program. These individuals are termed preceptors and usually supervise the educational experience of one or two students at a time in the practice facility where the preceptor works. These experiences take place throughout the curriculum with the greatest concentration in the last year. To effectively discharge this responsibility, preceptors need to understand the expectations of the curriculum, particularly since competency based assessment is being emphasized. They also need to review basic strategies to organize and provide a good learning experience at the site. Accreditation standards for pharmacy education also require orientation and training of preceptors for their teaching role.

Pharmacy preceptors involved in experiential education, particularly newly appointed individuals

Objectives

Part 1
1. Describe influences on pharmacy curricula that come from national organizations
2. Discuss the College’s vision for pharmacy education
3. Identify the components of the philosophy of practice adopted by the UK College of Pharmacy
4. List expected outcomes of the experiential education activities

Part 2
1. Discuss a preceptor’s role and responsibilities
2. Identify appropriate teaching strategies for a practice environment
3. Describe methods of providing feedback to students

Accreditation

CPE
The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

This knowledge-based activity has been assigned ACPE # 022-000-07-069-H04 and will award 1.00 contact hour(s) (0.1 CEU(s)) of continuing pharmacy education credit in states that recognize ACPE providers.

Statements of credit will indicate hours and CEUs based on participation and will be issued online at the conclusion of the activity. Successful completion includes completing the activity, its accompanying evaluation and/or posttest (score 70% or higher) and requesting credit online at the conclusion of the activity. The College complies with the Accreditation Standards for Continuing Pharmacy Education.
